SOFTWARE OPTIMIZATION
ON THE CAR

Individually adapted software for your vehicle on our dynamometer

Do you want more performance for your vehicle?
With software optimization, you can get up to 30% more performance out of a car. This process accesses the data stored on the car's central control unit.

Many production engines have untapped reserves in the power range. With software optimization, you can unleash these capacities and adjust your car more optimally to your needs.
  • Maximum performance

  • Overrun cut-off

  • V-Max cancellation

WHY CHIP TUNING? WHY DOESN'T THE MANUFACTURER GO FOR THE MAXIMUM RIGHT AWAY?

1. Compromise – manufacturers’ marketing departments:
When developing an engine/vehicle, car manufacturers have to take various mass-production and series-production issues into account. Manufacturers have to make compromises, so vehicles are not optimally calibrated from the factory and engine efficiency is lower. The results are higher fuel consumption and only average power output.

2. Compromise – global market:
A manufacturer’s sales and marketing departments give the development department specifications for a newly developed engine. Performance reserves are planned in advance that can be used for a later facelift, a new model, or a parallel model in the future – or already today.

3. Compromise – manufacturing tolerance:
Reserves are built in for countries with lower-quality fuels (low octane ratings or contamination) and for local environmental conditions such as extreme heat, extreme cold, high humidity, and low air pressure. So an engine planned for 140 PS is actually developed for 180 to 200 PS.

4. Compromise – engine control software:
Today, car manufacturers work with a large number of specialized suppliers. These suppliers are allowed to produce within an agreed tolerance range. There are both plus and minus tolerances. Thinking like a supplier, we would always produce a product so that it sits in the tolerance band that is cheapest for us as a supplier. Applied to production, an engine ordered with a compression ratio of 10:1 is actually delivered with a lower compression ratio of 8.5:1. The supplier is thus on the “cheaper and safer side.

The supplier of the engine control software puts the finishing touches on the engine and also programs on the “safe side”. In its calculations it assumes that, in the worst case, all negative manufacturing tolerances and external influences could coincide. In practice this never happens and leads to lower efficiency.

WHY SOFTWARE OPTIMIZATION – WHY DOESN'T THE CAR MANUFACTURER OFFER THE MAXIMUM?

When car manufacturers develop a new engine, many aspects have to be considered. Some of them require compromises that can mean the production engine’s power and fuel consumption are not optimal.

This already starts in the planning phase. Developing a new engine is a complicated, time-consuming, and expensive process. Therefore engines are often designed with performance reserves for a later update or a parallel model.

Engineers also have to take into account that external factors such as fuel quality and environmental conditions can vary greatly worldwide, yet the engine still has to deliver adequate performance almost everywhere. An engine that is perfectly suited to Norway’s harsh climate will probably not work as well in tropical regions – an engine cannot be optimized for all conditions at once.

One of the most important requirements is that the product can be manufactured efficiently in mass production. That means certain compromises have to be made that can affect the engine’s power and fuel efficiency.

The fourth and perhaps most important factor is safety. At every step toward the goal, those responsible ensure that sufficient safety margins are built in: the designers and developers, the engineers and manufacturers, or the suppliers of the control software. But because they only control their specific area of work, they assume a worst-case scenario in which all other factors coincide. In reality, however, this case never occurs, so some of these safety reserves can be used without actually causing a failure.
