Performance chip tuning – Why does the car manufacturer not offer the maximum?
When car manufacturers develop a new engine, there are many aspects to consider. Some of them require compromises that may lead to sub-optimal power output and fuel consumption of the stock engine.
This starts at the planning stage. Developing a new engine is a complicated, time-consuming and expensive process. As a result, engines are often designed with performance reserves in mind for use in a later update or a parallel model.
Engineers also have to take into account that external factors such as fuel quality and environmental conditions can vary dramatically around the world, but the engine still has to perform adequately almost everywhere. For example, an engine that is perfectly suited to the harsh climate of Norway is unlikely to perform as well in tropical regions – an engine simply cannot be optimized for all conditions at once.
One of the most important requirements is that the product can be mass-produced efficiently. This means that certain compromises must be made that may affect the engine’s performance and fuel efficiency.
The fourth and perhaps most important factor is safety. At every step along the way, the people responsible for that step make sure that sufficient safety margins are built in: be it the designers and developers, the engineers and manufacturers or the suppliers of control software. But because they only have control over their specific area of work, they assume a worst-case scenario in which all the other factors come together. In reality, however, this never happens, which means that some of these safety reserves can be utilized without actually risking failure.
